“(19) Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. (20) For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:19, 20
We sometimes refer to praying together as the prayer of agreement or corporate prayer. There is power in our agreement, not just in what we are praying about, but also in our relationships with one another. Our agreement doesn’t mean that we agree with everyone’s ideas; it means we are agreeable with each other. We love and care for one another. We are in unity with one another. When we come together sharing a bond of love in Christ and God’s purpose for our prayer, something supernatural happens.
There are several examples of people praying together in the book of Acts. One instance is found in Acts 1:12-14 when one hundred and twenty men and women prayed together in the upper room. Verse 14 says they were in “one accord in prayer and supplication.” It means they shared the same mind and the same purpose. The harmony they shared led them to action. Another occurrence is in Acts 2:1-4 as the Jews gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost. In verse 1 it says the believers were again, in one accord in one place. In Acts 2:42 it says that the believers were continually gathering together for teaching, fellowship, and prayer. In Acts 4, Peter and John were arrested. After they were released, they returned to their fellow believers. In verse 24 it says, “they raised their voice to God with one accord,” and they asked God give them power to heal, and that signs and wonders would be done as testimony to Jesus. The power of God filled the place so that it shook, and the Holy Spirit continued in filling them to speak the Gospel message with boldness. Another time, In Acts 12, the believers gathered together to pray for Peter’s release from prison. Stephen had been martyred. James had recently been martyred, and the church knew that Peter could have been next. The earnestly prayed for Peter, so that Peter was supernaturally released from prison, being led out by an angel of the Lord.
These are just a few of the examples of believers praying together and seeing results because of a oneness of heart and purpose. There is power when we pray together!
Application: Because of the covenant we share, there is power when we pray together. If you are married, pray with your spouse. If you have children, pray with your family. As Christians, pray with your church family and other believers. God will be with you and work through you.
