Mark 11:1-19

In verses 1-11, Mark writes about the Triumphal Entry. To read my commentary on the Triumphal Entry, please refer to February 1.

In vrses 15-19, Mark wites about Jesus cleansing the temple. The Jews were supposed to be bringing a sacrifice from their flock to be inspected for sacrifice, but instead, they were buying and selling sacrifices. The scribes and chief priests were fine with money being made in the temple (verse 18).

Deuteronomy 1-2

Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, with Deuteronomy as the fifth book. Even though Moses is forbidden to enter Canaan, he has joy and anticipation for the nation to complete their assignment and possession the land. Thirty-five times in Deuteronomy Moses tells the Hebrews to “go in and possess” the land. Thirty-four times he reminds them that God is the One who will give them the land.

In chapter 1, Moses recalls some history, when leaders were appointed, when Israel refused to possess the land, and the consequences to their rebellion.

Verse 31 is especially intimate between God and Israel with Moses saying, “in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carried his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.” God cherishes the dependent relationship we have on Him as a father cherishes his young son. It’s poetic, and it’s true. God loves us.

In chapter 2, Moses recollects the wilderness journey, and even in their disobedience, verse 7 says, “you have lacked nothing.” As our Father, God keeps His responsibility to care for our needs. It is personal. It is special. It is our Father.
