Mark 5:21-43
As in Matthew 9:18-31, we read this account of Jesus raising Jairus’ daughter from the dead and healing the woman with the issue of blood along the way.
Jairus was one of the rulers of the synagogue. He went searching for Jesus, begged Him to earnestly. He believed Jesus could change his situation and his daughter’s condition.
Jairus’ asked Jesus to come, lay His hands on his very sick daughter, so that she would be healed, and live. The word for healed is the Greek word “sozo,” the same word for salvation. Jesus saves us, or rescues us, from many things, including spiritual death, sickness, poverty, and bondage.
He also knew the concept of laying hands on the sick and the transfer of power, requesting Jesus come in person to touch her.
While Jesus was still speaking to the woman with the issue of blood, Jairus received news that his daughter had died. They didn’t want to trouble Jesus.
Jesus heard the words spoken to Jairus, know the news was heartbreaking, so Jesus said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
Jesus only allowed three disciples to follow Him. Then Jesus put the mourners out of the room, only allowing the parents in. Sometimes, it is best to have only a few in the room. Get the ridiculers out. Maybe people doubt that your God-given dream will come true. Get them out of the room. Maybe people criticize or ridicule you the promise God gave you. Get them out of the room. Maybe people want to “help” you by telling you their opinion or offering you their methods. Get them out of the room. LET JESUS HAVE THE ROOM. When HE walks into the room, everything changes!
Numbers 12-14
Miriam and Aaron were familiar with Moses, criticizing him for marrying an Ethiopian woman, a foreigner. They despised Moses’ position of authority, saying, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken to us also?”
“And the Lord heard it.” He heard their judgmental, faultfinding attitudes. He heard their disrespect for His chosen leader.
In Numbers 12:3 it says that Moses was more humble than all men who were on the face of the earth. Perhaps this is why God chose Moses in the first place. A humble person is a person who will bring himself or herself under the authority of God. Believe me, you don’t want to come against the man or woman who is under the hand the of God.
In verse 7, God says that Moses is FAITHFUL in all His house.”
God says He will speak with His servant face to face, not through a dream or vision.
He says He will speak with His servant plainly, not in dark sayings.
God says Moses sees the form of the Lord.
God said to Aaron and Miriam, “WHY WERE YOU NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK AGAINST MY SERVANT MOSES?” In verse 9, we see how angry God was.
The cloud departed from the tabernacle. The Holy Spirit was grieved and departed. After that, Miriam was struck with leprosy, suddenly. Moses interceded for her, and the Lord decided to heal her after being outside of the camp for 7 days.
In verse 13, the Lord instructed twelve men to be sent into Canaan to see the promise and report back, one from every tribe. They were in Canaan for forty days. They brought back a sample of the fruit, acknowledging the good land, but ten of the men said they could not overcome the cities and the large men.
Caleb said, “Let us go up at once, and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” The ten disagreed, saying they were like grasshoppers in their own sight, and would be in their sight. In Proverbs 23:7 it says, “As a man thinks in his own heart, so is he.” If we see ourselves as small and insignificant, then we’ll behave as such. However, if we see ourselves as God sees us, we will behave as those of faith, strong in HIM, not in ourselves.
In Numbers 14, the people listened to the ten spies that said it was impossible. After slavery in Egypt, after wandering in the desert, instead of believing God, they thought all was for nothing. They wept through the night in despair, thinking the promise was unattainable. After seeing plagues in Egypt, after the signs at Sinai, after miracles in the desert, the Hebrew children still did not believe God. They had a slave mentality rather than a son mentality.
In verse 8, the people said, “If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land.” Every leader has experienced people who would go with them, people who would complain and criticize them, people who would leave them for another leader. Every leader needs to know that the faith of the people is really between the people and God. They belong to Him, and He will deal with them.
In verse 34, God decided the judgment will be one year for every day the Hebrews were in the land, bearing their guilt and knowing God’s rejection. There were those who decided to try in their own strength to move forward, but they did not have God with them.
Whatever we do, we should aim to have the Lord with us, and THEN we will be prosperous and have success!
